What do you guys thinks of metal head gaskets? I know Vince just installed a multi-layered metal head gasket on his S52. Since I need to replace my head gasket, I was considering going with a metal one, so I hopefully won't have another gasket failure any time soon.

This company offers a couple of options:

The have a single layer gasket and various multi-layered ones. The single layer gasket looks like a nice option. What about getting a slightly thinner gasket, though? It would raise the compression, with a trade off of less clearance. I know from experience that there isn't a lot of clearance to begin with. If you over-rev, you are loosing valves not matter what. What do you guys think?

Oh, and as for price--they run about $100 more than the standard gasket.

Thanks,

All the serious guys I know see no problem with a metal headgasket but the only ones I'm sure about are copper. So the only thing you gotta worry about is the metals reacting between surfaces. Different metals tend to react against each other over time. I don't need a copper gasket because my motor isn't on boost. Most people just go with ARP head studs and keep a stock gasket and you'll never go broke again.

I've been using MLS headgaskets from VAC Motorsports. They seem to hold up quite well compared to the OEM gaskets.

I think the price is worth it for the reliability.

I just installed a MLS head gasket on the M30 in the 635 CSI LeMons car. It held up awesome despite overheating the motor twice due to cooling system problems.
